Just before all of this pirate shit started up I read an article about how European and Asian poachers were illegally fishing in Somalian waters. In that article there was also a brief mention of illegal dumping in those same waters off the coast of Somalia.
When I started hearing about "pirates" taking over ships and all that I figured it couldn't be that simple. Today on Boing Boing there's a link to a great post about the truth behind some of this so called "pirate" activity. While I have no doubt that there are true marauders amongst the reports I have a feeling that the majority are people just trying to reclaim what is theirs and protect themselves.
Take a minute to read this and then think twice about what you would do in their situation.
