Lou Reed’s Metal Machine Trio Played Gramercy Theatre (Friday Show)
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
If you’re at all familiar with 1975’s Metal Machine Music you know exactly what this show was like without having to attend. Lou Reed described the album as such: “Well, anyone who gets to side four is dumber than I am.”
That’s a pretty badass thing to say. Reason being, Lou Reed is a formidable badass. The dude inspires fear and respect. There’s no question about it. And I wouldn’t say it about many muthers out there.
So, Let’s get right to it.
The show was 40 minutes long and Lou Reed smiled nearly the entire time. So that was kinda nice to see.
I could feel sorry for the people that paid the $100 charge to see this. But I don’t.
They must have known what they were in for, with the show being billed as “a night of deep noise and no vocals.”
This music’s determination to kill all pop and rock sensibilities is respectable. But it never allowed anyone in the audience to relax.
Reed was joined by John Zorn (on sax) and two German guys (on keyboards and sax), whose names are barely pronounceable let alone spellable.
I guess you could say the same thing about the metal machine music.
Experiencing the single set, single song, 40-minute drone of feedback gave me a painful feeling that slowly passed and gone into a dullness that I completely mistrusted.
But it was fun. Maybe a test of fortitude is a more accurate way to describe it. This was music you could feel. Literally. The noise was so incredibly deep, so loud I could feel my throat rumbling. I could feel it in my balls. Kind of the way I feel on a rollercoaster (or of course, when we used to climb the ropes in gym class).
And I can’t really imagine Lou smiling if he was forced to continue to play Sweet Jane and Walk on the Wild Side for drunk concertgoers.
One highlight was Zorn and the other saxophoner battling. Kind of like a cockfight. It looked like one, and it definitely sounded like one. And who dosen’t love a good cockfight? Peck out thee eyes! Peck thee ears! But only half the fun at a cockfight is the violence. The other half is gambling. Who’s taking the bets here? And who wins? So who cares?
I wanna be black
I wanna be Malcolm X
Cast a hex
Over president Kennedy’s tomb
And have a big prick too
They lead us along, as promised, through the noise that tied our standards up in knots. I kept wondering if all this bullshit boils down to him or us. Is this self-righteous nonsense? Is the audience entertained? Is that even the point anymore? Are all these spectators enjoying this music on some primal level that I am cowardly ignoring?
After about 30 minutes I thought, “Can anyone stand this dark wail for any longer?”
Then a wave of “maybe this is fiendishly humorous” passed across me like whatthefuck!
I can’t pretend to enjoy this on any other level. It’s a fascinating decay, but I’m no masochist.
But I know It takes all kinds of mutherfuckers , and mutherfuckers punish their ears in worse ways than Metal Machine Music (insert your worst and most hated band here). So some people deserve to have their ears rot. And I’m sure there is a special place in hell where ears will be severed or filled with deafening puss.
So yeah: fuck the general public.
But what about the faithful? The fans. Fuck them as well? Do they share some kind of passion for a musical art that I am somehow refusing?
Is there a statement being made here? Is this music supposed to be about inner-pain? Modern pseudo-insanity? Like these things, it seemed random, careless, and totally irrelevant.
Still, I don’t think Lou Reed is trying to exploit anyone. He doesn’t have to. He’s Lou Reed for christ’s sake! But maybe he’s afraid to admit he’s washed up.
I asked people their opinions after the lights came up. Maybe I’m not that personable, but with performance enhancing drugs in belly and brain, I tried to be. Still, no one had much to say to me. So the only conclusion I could draw was: if this music is so interesting then why doesn’t anyone have anything interesting to say about it?
Oh yeah, and anyone that doesn’t jerk off three times a day is a square. And squares don't roll.
Lou fulfilled his dreadful oath, thanked the crowd, and disappeared from stage. House lights came on, people went about the rest of their Friday night.

My Dad Reviewed The New Levon Helm Album, Electric Dirt
____________________________________________________
Levon Helm of Woodstock, NY and his band play to what's good in us. If you haven't been to Midnight Ramble, go. His new CD, Electric Dirt touches all the chords of a fine story teller.
His songs of joy make me cry for my own. His songs of trials and tribulations of love and life make me laugh at mine. His voice stirs up the tears and laughter of an old man that can still look back, shake his head and smile that smile. Like an old pal, Levon's hangin' out close by. The strong voice for the ages, that roared through my youth, is now worn and weathered, like the wisdom of an old friend.
Songs like "Tennessee Jed," "You Can't Love What You Never Had" and "Growing Trade" give Electric Dirt the sound that makes this old man look back and smile. Smile at my family and friends. Smile at the road that brought me here. And through all that, Levon's voice safely carries me home. And for that I am grateful.
Electric Dirt by The Levon Helm Band is another beautiful time piece. It will join me and Gus on the back porch for a long time. Here's to good health and good music from an old friend.
-Kerry K

Ratatat & Kid Cudi Played Terminal 5
__________________________________
So, Kid Cudi. Until tonight I had never actually heard of him. Apologies for being out of the ‘underground, hipster-rap mixtape' loop. A little research prior to the show resulted in some interesting results: his collaboration with Kanye West on 808’s and Heartbreak, including the tracks “Welcome to Heartbreak”, “Paranoid”, and “Heartless”; a homemade ‘trailer’ for the new Transformers movie featuring his song “Sky Might Fall” that is rumored to have lead to talks to make it official; and appearances in Rolling Stone, on 106 & Park, and MTV for his new album Man on the Moon, among other things.
When I arrived, there was some dude alone on stage with nothing but a laptop, earnestly rapping his little heart out to a bored-but-empathetic crowd. I thought – please, no. That can’t be him…
I reminded myself of Ratatat to curb my urge to bail and upon closer inspection (and a glance at the clock) I realized with relief that it wasn’t.
Kid Cudi walked onstage literally a few minutes after Earnest Rapper Guy, “straight from the airport” and one of the first things he said was something like: “How many of you motha-fuckas even know who I am?”
I was embarrassed that I did not, because mostly everyone up in the place made noise. It seemed not only was he known by these hipster kids, but they seemed to wake the hell up when he came out, which I thought would not happen until Ratatat emerged.
He signaled his DJ and the show began. Immediately, I started drawing comparisons to Kanye West and Lupe Fiasco, but once I really started listening to tracks like “Dat New, New”, “Sky Might Fall”, and “Day and Night” I began to study him as an isolated entity in a genre saturated with…sameness. Sure, he had himself an Auto-Tuner, okay he wore, big geek glasses, and yeah he proclaimed himself an original like most hip-hop artists do.
But he danced. He was passionate about his shit – yelling at the sound guy to pump it up because “this is my shit and I want it to sound the best”. For me, Kanye West is a dude who makes pretty decent music, wears weird outfits, and really can’t carry a tune. Whereas Kid Cudi is my cousin…the dude who lives down the street…I wanted to go backstage and kick it with him. I wanted to get to know him, and I’ll tell you that’s impressive because that is not something that happens to me when I listen to hip-hop. His tracks are thoughtful, real, and…well, earnest. But not lame-earnest like the previous occupant of the stage (sorry, dude, whoever you are, but – give it a couple of years, will you?).
I downloaded “Day ‘n’ Night” on iTunes the second I got home and will go on the search for his other mixtape tracks soon.
Ratatat.
Where do I begin? I’m sure to offend lots and lots of people. Here goes…I actually really enjoy them – in the intimate confines of my headphones or my home sound system. I’m not sure what I expected of their live show, not having been to one before now. And, actually, when the bright lights blasted on with the heavy electric synthesizer intro, I got really excited like everyone else up in the place.
Their giant projector screen featuring weird, pop-culture imagery and video was rad, and guitarist Mike Stroud’s Pete Townsend-like back-bend began what I expected to be a mega-electrifying show.
Then…something happened. It started with my favorite song of theirs, “Wildcat”, and went on through song after song, so much so that I found myself scratching my head in confusion. I hate to use my douche bag voice here, but…dude, every song sounded the same!
I couldn’t tell if they were playing “Tropicana”, “Nostrand”, or “Germany to Germany” from one track to the next. Was it just me? Everyone else was dancing their asses off, smiling from ear-to-ear, spilling their beers all over themselves in their rapturous enjoyment of the show. Meanwhile I just stood there like…seriously? I’m the ‘tard, here?
I mean I tried – I really tried to get into it, but this problem bugged the crap out of me the whole time. Once it was over, and people were streaming out of the place sweaty and looking dazed with satisfaction, I immediately put on my headphones and found them on my iPod. I listened harder to each song than I ever have, and they are definitely distinctly different. So what gives?
Perhaps the key when going to see these kinds of acts is just to let the music wash over you, beer in hand, and bask in the blending of beats and rhythm without analyzing it too much. Let those bright-ass lights and that tightly bundled mass of people moving and swaying hypnotize you until you’re gyrating and pumping your fist for the hell of it with little thought beyond “this is awesome!” Perhaps…but that’s not my scene, man.
I still really like Ratatat…in my headphones.

Video: Dynasty Electric "Closer To Contact"
Dynasty Electric - Closer To Contact from AbsolutePitchPR on Vimeo.
How does an unknown Brooklyn-based indie band score a $50,000 music video for free? The answer involved interns, condoms, and a little bit of luck.
When critically acclaimed production company SuperFad decided to start producing music videos late last year, they needed a video for their demo reel. A company intern had just been blown away by Dynasty Electric’s live performance at a loft party and he suggested they work with the band. Their MySpace was quickly pulled up andbefore you can say “MTV", Dynasty Electric was filming their video for Closer to Contact, the lead single off their new Burning EP.
SuperFad, who has created ads for Nike, Visa, Nascar, and MTV, in addition to the infamous “Get It On ” Durex ad, came up with a playfully sexy homage to Barbarella. The finished video is a perfect showcase for the band’s psychedelic electro-indie rock sound. Over the course of four minutes, Dynasty Electric front woman Jennifer DeVeau must fight to save Dynasty guitarist Seth Misterka from evil scientist Durand Durand and his death-by-orgasm "Excessive Machine". A performance of the band tearing through the song, highlighted by Seth’s cutting guitar and Jennifer’s wailing theremin and Blondie-on-acid vocals, is interspersed between the story.

CNN Interviews Anvil
28 years ago John Roberts of CNN interviewed the then up-and-coming Anvil. Now that they've finally broke John decided to sit down and interview the boys once again.
I was going to embed the video but it didn't work. Plus the code didn't include dimensions so I couldn't adjust it to fit anyway. Why is it the bigger the company the shittier the web player? I don't understand it.

This also brings up one of things I've been meaning to suggest to David but always forget when I run into him. Apes & Androids NEEDS to cover "Day Man," which they may have done already, but if not what do I need to do to make it happen? And now that A&A know the gang maybe they even get Charlie and Dennis to join them as special guests.

Volunteer Coast Guard Of Somalia
Just before all of this pirate shit started up I read an article about how European and Asian poachers were illegally fishing in Somalian waters. In that article there was also a brief mention of illegal dumping in those same waters off the coast of Somalia.
When I started hearing about "pirates" taking over ships and all that I figured it couldn't be that simple. Today on Boing Boing there's a link to a great post about the truth behind some of this so called "pirate" activity. While I have no doubt that there are true marauders amongst the reports I have a feeling that the majority are people just trying to reclaim what is theirs and protect themselves.
Take a minute to read this and then think twice about what you would do in their situation.

NOW THAT PEOPLE DO BELIEVE AND SUPPORT MY MUSIC AND PRODUCTS THE BEST RESPONSE IS THANK YOU INSTEAD OF "I TOLD YOU SO!!!" IT'S COOL TO TALK SHIT WHEN YOU'RE RAPPING BUT NOT IN REAL LIFE. WHEN YOU MEET LITTLE WAYNE IN PERSON HE'S THE NICEST GUY FOR EXAMPLE. I JUST WANNA BE A DOPER PERSON WHICH STARTS WITH ME NOT ALWAYS TELLING PEOPLE HOW DOPE I THINK I AM. I NEED TO JUST GET PAST MYSELF. DROP THE BRAVADO AND JUST MAKE DOPE PRODUCT. EVERYTHING IS NOT THAT SERIOUS. AS LONG AS PEOPLE THINK I ACT LIKE A BITCH THIS TYPE OF SHIT WILL HAPPEN TO ME. I GOT A LONG ROAD AHEAD OF ME TO MAKE PEOPLE BELIEVE I'M NOT ACTUALLY A HUGE DOUCHE BUT I'M UP FOR THE CHALLENGE. I'M SURE THE WRITERS AT SOUTH PARK ARE REALLY NICE PEOPLE IN REAL LIFE. THANKS FOR TAKING THE TIME TO DRAW MY CREW. THAT WAS PRETTY FUNNY ALSO!! I'M SURE THERE'S GRAMMATICAL ERRORS IN THIS... THAT'S HOW YOU KNOW IT'S ME!

Superdrag Played Bowery Ballroom 4/9
-------------------------------------------------
We were supposed to meet at Bowery Ballroom at 8pm. Irvin (BSC picture-taker aka Mr. Photog) and Ethan were waiting for me out front. I was about 20 minutes late.
Ethan- “Nine, Ten, Eleven. Remember those numbers,”
“What’s that? Why?”
“That’s all he said when I asked him when the show starts.”
He looked over his shoulder to a 250 lb bearded Suge Knight look-alike checking IDs at the door.
“…Asshole.”
I couldn’t tell if he was talking to me or Suge.
“So the first band doesn’t go on for another forty minutes? Sorry guys.”
Yes, I am absent-minded. I think most of my friends realize this by now.
“Well, look on the bright side: gives us plenty of time to get drunk. What bars are around here?”
Irvin- “Crash Mansion or R Bar. There’s not much else around.”
I’m not a big fan of either of those bars, and I expressed as much. But Mr. Photog makes friends everywhere he goes. Not only is he incredibly affable and energetic. He LOVES taking pictures of people, and it shows, which is inherently flattering to anybody getting their picture taken by him.
Pia was bartending at R Bar. Friendly, funny, and beautiful, (Pia, if I had a phone, I might have the balls to ask for your number) she poured us beers as a terrible band’s guitarist squealed away from the back room.
Pia- “So you guys are actually sort of working right now?”
Sobering reminder of the task at hand. She had been regaling us with tales of blackout drunkenness. All the stories were second-hand, since she didn’t remember any of it herself. Try saying “21-34 30th Ave at 31st St” next time you get into a cab after 12 cosmos. He dropped her off in Times Square.
I looked at my watch. It was after 10 o’clock. We had to get back.
Bowery Ballroom. Downstairs we saw my two old roommates, Valeria and Stella. They are both big fans of Superdrag. In fact, they went to both NYC shows on both nights. And I think I remember Stella saying something like, “They are my favorite band ever. But you have to understand, I was like 15 when they came out.” An unprovoked apology for liking the band.
I’ve heard a lot of that stuff about Superdrag. Somebody else I know, who’s musical tastes are usually on the same rails as mine, has autographed and framed setlists from two of their shows. My awareness of them is as a band from the mid-90s glut of post-grunge MTV bands. And I don’t like to do that to bands. I don’t like to pigeonhole them into one-hit wonderdom just because I’ve been unaware of their output over the years. They have a respectable following, even after these 15 years, and after an alcoholism-induced breakup and subsequent Christian output by their main songwriter. But they’re back now. New record. New tour. And I was at Bowery Ballroom to listen and hopefully discover what I’d been missing. And they brought their friends from Knoxville to open up for them.
We got there just at the end of The Tenderhooks set, and Irvin disappeared into the scattered bodies near the front of the stage. If not for the lightning flashes from his camera, there would’ve been no evidence of his presence. Inter-gender country vocal harmonies, while the guitarist finger-picked his way through a humble progression. I’m such a sucker for that stuff. “Raise high the roof beams, dancing” was their final refrain for the night. I thought it set a nice theme. Suddenly Irv reappeared at my side against the bar.
“They sound good. Look at these pictures I got.”
He scrolled through a few of the shots he’d snapped on his camera’s view screen.
Next band was The High Score. Shiny new Les Pauls crunched out some good ole Tennessee bar fare. They reminded me of the Black Crows, without the recklessness. Nothing really to think about. I was getting it. Music’s fun. You don’t have to analyze it and write an 800 word blog about it. A nice thought. I wish I could subscribe in earnest. “It’s a mighty good wine” they sang.
Something a little peculiar happened when Superdrag walked onto the stage. First of all, they were setting up all their own equipment, plugging into amps and pedals, setting levels. There wasn’t a curtain or anything to hide them. They were exposed, and everyone in the room was silently staring at them. Judging from the eavesdropping I was doing, most people there were long time fans excited to see one of their favorite bands reunited. You would think there would be some positive heckling. “I love you John Davis!” Something like that. It was silent. They were looking at them as if looking into an aquarium.
So they start the first song. People sing along. Verse-Chorus-Verse-Chorus-Bridge-Chorus-Out. They do it again. And again. They are good songs. There is NOTHING to think about. So why am I thinking about it? I have another drink. There are cheers. But the band looks a little affected. Especially Davis. Is there some sort of underlying Christian guilt about reforming a band that drove you to addiction, the sin of false idolatry? Is he thinking about it too much? Am I? Yes. Definitely. They are good songs. Just shut up and enjoy them. Ethan finishes off a beer, burps, and says “I feel like I’m eating dry white toast that’s 15 years old. Let’s get outta here.”
I never even got to hear them sing it: “Who sucked out the FEEELAAAAANG?”

NY Howl, Wild Yaks, The Beets & K-Holes Played Glasslands
According to the Glasslands website the show started at 9PM. Of course the info was wrong but luckily I double checked the flyer to make sure on my way over and realized it actually started at 10PM. So we decided to stop into the Levee for a drink before the show. After imbibing in a Sportsman and a fruity drink for the lady we headed over to the show.
NY Howl were about to go on when we got there. I was surprised they were playing so early because they usually get pretty crazy. Despite the tiny group of people there at that point they went on. We were upstairs in the balcony watching. I've seen the Howl at least 3 times before and this is not the same band. It's a stripped down (they're a three piece now, no brass) version of the band. I never noticed the obvious White Stripe thing they have going on - I think the horns covered that up. Either way they're still awesome and put on a good show, as always, despite a minor guitar malfunction.
Next up was Wild Yaks, again I don't get why they played second. As with the Howl, it was still early and people were just starting to trickle in. Like I said I was pretty excited to finally see these guys. Based on the show I have nothing bad to say about them.
They were a bigger band then I thought - two guitars, sax, bass and drums. I was expecting a 3-piece and was surprised by how crowded the stage was. The guitar player was awesome and managed to work in some shredding at interesting points. I loved the group vocals - everyone sang and I think more bands should consider this because it sounds awesome. The highlights were of course when they closed the set with "River May Come" and "Tomahawk," both instant classics which had everyone shouting along and dancing.
I was about to leave after Wild Yaks and then ran into Jeremy J (he DJ'd the last Ski Club party) so I stuck around for a bit. I'm glad I did because The Beets came on next. I had no idea who these kids were but I was digging it. There was definite Black Lips thing going on but it felt more NYC. I wish I had heard some stuff of theirs before hand so I could get into it a little more. They were good fun and luckily had a nice crowd to play to at this point in the night. They were a perfect lead in to K-Holes, who actually feature an ex Black Lip.
Being a big Black Lips fan I was looking forward to K-Holes. I've heard good things from friends but I wasn't sure what to expect because the recordings they have online are not so great. I have to say they were not what I expected. Sure there was a bit of a Black Lips thing but they definitely have their own sound. I'd compare them more to the Cramps or B-52s then Black Lips. You can call it what you will but they were pretty fucking awesome. Oh, and the chick on bass has a Debbie Harry thing going on which is pretty damn adorable.
Some of the kids started showing up right after K-Holes but my old ass wanted to go home and relax. So I said my farewells and went home completely satisfied, seven bucks well spent.

Free Art Brut Track "Weird Science" On RCRD LBL
The new Art Brut album Art Brut VS. Satan hit stores today. I'd tell you to go buy it but no one sent me an advance so I haven't heard it yet. Let's assume it's awesome though, Art Brut is pretty solid.
Anyway, RCRD LBL is giving away a new track called "Weird Science"
Play A Brooklyn Ski Club Show
There are some requirements that I should point out.
- Must have a following in Brooklyn. You don't have to draw 100 people but if you can't get 20-30 friends to show up to a free, or really cheap, show then come back later.
- If you're looking to get rich then you're in the wrong place dude. I do these shows for fun, not for money (I made -$10, yes that's a negative, at the last party). Hopefully you want to play for the same reason. That said, of course we'll give you something from the door (if there's a cover) but the amount depends on the draw - ya dig?
- Promote the show! Too many bands wait until the day of to tell people they're playing. Fuck that! Don't be lazy. I bust my ass getting the word out and so should you. You do WANT people to see you play right?
