I don't know much about Cerebral Ballzy - skate punk, thrash, chaos. Really that's all you need right there. The band sounds like a perfect mix of Suicidal Tendencies, Municipal Waste, and Bad Brains. I will be at this show, drunk as shit, throwin' bows like it's 1995.

"Piss Between My Legs!" She Said Excitedly
So I'm at some crazy punk rock party in Bushwick last night. The party was in a tiny apartment that had way too many people crammed into it. The shitty little mosh pit in the dining room died down as the band finished up their set. That's when I realized I had to take a piss.
I pushed my way through the crowd and took my place in line. I waited at the end of the line, which extended into the kitchen, for the five or so people in front of me to do their business. That's when she got in line behind me.
I didn't really notice her at first, she was unassuming - especially amongst the mohawk and tattoo crowd. Then she started talking loudly to her friend behind me and that's when I turned around. She was a cute girl in a fur coat who seemed out of place at a crazy ass punk party.
Somehow I ended up inserting myself into their conversation. I remember discussing the line and how slowly it was moving. She said "I piss like a dude" to those behind her to ensure them she wouldn't be nearly as long as the dicks in front of us - who were probably doing blow.
Then she turned to me and asked me if she could accompany me to the bathroom. She wanted to know if I was willing to speed things up by pissing in the sink while she pissed in the toilet. I denied her offer saying that I would feel bad pissing in some dudes sink. Then her friend interjected with a solution, "She can sit on the toilet and you can stand over her and piss between her legs" she said jokingly.
I laughed along with the friend as it was quite a funny suggestion but she wasn't laughing. A look of great excitement came over her face. "Yeah! Piss between my legs!" she said excitedly. Again, I laughed until I realized that she wasn't actually joking. Her friends joke became a serious suggestion. Upon seeing that she was totally into the suggestion, the friend encouraged me to go along with it too.
It's not many times in life that a man is made such an offer, especially by a stranger. The fact is I wanted to do it, if for no other reason than it's a once in a lifetime experience. This was quite a dilemma. After some serious thought I decided to decline. The fact is, displaying my wang in front of a random girl in a bathroom (even in a non-sexual manner) would probably upset my girlfriend. So I totally pussied out.
The girls were noticeably upset that I refused such an amazing offer. I mean if you make a grand intimate proposal like that you expect compliance. I felt pretty bad, for both upsetting her and knowing I'd regret my decision, but I would have felt even worse the next day had I done it.
So I went into the bathroom solo while they waited in line outside. I finished my business, washed my hands, and stepped back into the hallway. When I opened the door I was greeted by the girls with looks of utmost disgust. I said nothing but raised my arms and tilted my head in that "sorry, nothing I can do about it" gesture.
Then I pushed my way back through the crowd to rejoin my friends drinking vodka in the corner. I immediately shared my story because, let's face it, it's a fucking awesome tale to tell. My story was followed first by dropped jaws and laughter and then by "What the fuck dude! Why didn't you do it? Seriously? I would have fucking done that shit! What's wrong with you? Where's this girl at?".
Of course, under the barrage of criticism, I started to doubt myself. Maybe I should have done it because... Well, let's face it - that ain't happening again, ever. All night long as we hopped around from place to place I was reminded of my folly. "Dude, what were you thinking, man?" was the mantra of the night.
Then I got home and shared the night's highlight with my girlfriend. She thought it was hilarious and was quite pleased I didn't do the deed. That's when I realized I made the right choice. You see had I actually done it I would have had to keep this gem of a story to myself. However, in refraining, I gained an awesome story I could actually tell you all about!

Listen To This: William Elliott Whitmore
Last night I went over to the Bowery Ballroom to check out City & Colour (no need for a review - awesome as always). The surprise came from the opener, a lone troubadour named William Elliott Whitmore. I was not expecting to hear down-home Americana music last night but damn if it wasn't refreshing. Maybe I'm late to the party but it's the first I've heard this dude. Judging from the people yelling out songs I might be but if you haven't heard read on.
WEW has a voice that rough and beautiful at the same time, think along the lines of Joe Cocker mixed with random old ass bluegrass dudes.
During the set he switched between an old acoustic and a banjo. He also had a little kick drum set up to keep time. But the most impressive instrument is this dudes voice.
If you're into the whole O'Death, Honne Wells, Langhorne Slim, etc. thing then this dude is right up your alley. If you're not into that scene then get with it because it's the best shit coming out right now.
WEW is from Iowa and has somehow landed tours with bands that sound absolutely nothing like what he's doing - City & Colour, Clutch, Murder By Death, etc. The thing is, judging from last night, people fucking get it. That's really surprising and also shows I have no faith in people.
WEW has an album coming out in a month or two. I suggest you pick up that one a few old ones while you're at it. But most importantly go see this dude play as soon as you can.

Make Your Own Black Lips Video, Win Something
Wanna make a video kids?
Atlanta rockcandy garageniks The Black Lips are back. After turning the music world on its ear with last year’s triumphantly bratty breakthrough Good Bad Not Evil, the quartet is set to return on February 24th with its third Vice release 200 Million Thousand. Prepare for vintage Lips: a snotty 14-track celebration of unadorned rock n roll and no-bullshit songwriting. The startlingly jangley “Starting Over,” available for download below, is the first track previewed from the record.
Download And Share “Starting Over”
From The Black Lips’ 200 Million Thousand [Vice Records; February 24th, 2009]
In an e-card released to fans over the Holidays, the Lips announced an imminent video contest for “Starting Over.” The ambitious hope was to have 200 Million Thousand(!) videos made for the song, and to name one supreme creation victorious. Now, the wait is over. Partnering with Vimeo.com, the contest officially launched yesterday and runs until February 15th. The winning director will receive – other than bragging rights, of course – a feature on the homepage of Vimeo.com, an extra special 7” of LP-standout “Short Fuse,” and a signed copy of 200 Million Thousand.

Tonight: City And Colour @ Bowery Ballroom
The lead singer (Dallas Green) of my favorite band (Alexisonfire) is in town with his solo project, City & Colour. At this point you've probably heard C&C, since it's been blowing up like crazy over the past 2 years or so. Every time Dallas comes through town he sells out a much larger venue then the last time he was in town. This time it's TWO sold out nights at Bowery Ballroom - impressive!
If you're a fan of AOF then I have no idea if you'll dig City & Colour. It sounds nothing like Alexis but there is, of course, the perfect voice of Dallas leading the way. Otherwise it's mostly acoustic and mellow, two words never used to describe AOF. That said I've seen C&C live and Dallas is fucking amazing to witness. I'll be there tonight truly enjoying myself, which doesn't happen at shows too much these days.
Here's some video from the last time I saw Dallas:

This is kinda funny. Although, why is Pantera in the "actually foreign" category? Did Texas finally secede?

Microsoft Songsmith: Worst Ad EVER!
Who in the fuck came up with this gem? The dude who made all those company training videos in the 80's? First of all this program is shit based on the music in the commercial. Second these fucking people in the ad... fuck!
If Microsoft's goal is to make me want to blow my fucking head off with a shotgun then mission accomplished. Jesus H, really? Dudes if this shit is the best you can do it's time to pack it up. I fucking hate Macs but you kinda just convinced me to switch over.
I truly hope this is a joke.

Tonight: NC-17, Ether, Steam Machine, Bowie Bash
My night starts at 9PM, Lit. A's Rage, which is a dude from my hometown, will be kicking off NC-17 with a live performance. Then there's 3 other awesome parties, luckily 2 of those parties are at the same joint - Happy Endings. So I have no plan for getting around tonight. I might stay at Lit or I might hit them all. Either way I'll be drinking heavily.
***Bonus: Open bar from 8-10 at CBGBs (or whatever they're calling 315 Bowery)

This sounds like a fun time if you're down to brave the cold tonight.
Fiasco Playing Free Show At Cake Shop
Fiasco has announced a free show at Cake Shop on January 23rd. There was no time mentioned in the email I got but let's assume around 9. If you can get in then it should be a good time.
They also sent over a retarded MP3 of them doing a song acapella. Once you hear it you'll agree that they picked the right song for this - given the title of the song and all.

R.I.P. Ron Asheton (The Stooges)
There isn't much I can say about The Stooges that hasn't been said 1,000 times over. They're without question one of the single most important bands in rock n' roll history, especially punk. I'm sad to report that Ron Asheton, founding member and guitar player, was found dead today. The cause of death is still unknown. Ron was 60 years old.
I was fortunate enough to catch The Stooges this summer at the Virgin Festival. They were on fucking fire that day and from what I've heard this was the standard for all of there shows since their reunited. It's a damn shame that this happened so soon after the band finally put aside their differences and started destroying stages again.

Idea Of Fun - The Stooges
***When I was 14 (or so) I got my first electric guitar. I immediately started a band with a drummer I knew. The very first song I ever wrote on guitar had the EXACT same riff as "I Wanna Be Your Dog". The thing is I had yet to discover The Stooges at that point. About a year later I heard The Stooges and was surprised to hear that I unknowingly ripped them off. Of course I instantly loved The Stooges since my early playing was apparently very "Ron Asheton".

Biggest Album Flops Of 2008
Metromix put together quite an interesting piece about some of the most disappointing albums of 2008. The list is focused on sales and not quality, although I suppose there's a correlation.
Not surprisingly Axl's epic "Chinese Democracy" is at the top of the list. The rest of the list has some surprises but I don't want to ruin it for you.
Download Every Beatles Track For Free
Some Norwegian broadcasting company cut a deal which allows them to release every Beatles song ever as a podcast. If you understand Norwegian then you'll also dig the three minute discussion that accompanies each and every song (212 total). I guess the Norse are trying to make up for all those years of raping and pillaging.

Warship (ex-From Autumn To Ashes)
While Long Island hardcore band, From Autumn To Ashes, is on "indefinite hiatus" a couple members started something new. The band, featuring Francis and Rob from FATA, is called Warship and it's a fitting name. Being that Francis has a very unique vocal style it certainly reminds you of FATA on that level but aside from the vocals this is nothing like FATA.
The music is heavy, actually "meaty" might be a better word to describe the crushing riffs of Warship. The guitar definitely has a southern/biker metal quality - think Crowbar, Down, Motorhead, Clutch, etc. This is surprising from a bunch of LI dudes but a good surprise nonetheless. Another surprise is how well the, for lack of a better term, screamo vocal stylings mix with the sludgy riffing.
I still haven't heard the whole album yet, only what's on MySpace, but so far so good. Warship only has one show listed, in Long Island (of course), but based on their bio it seems like they have a tour in the works for 2009.
