Tonight: Food Swings, OhMyRockness, NCAA, & Shows

If you can't find something to do tonight then you should probably just leave New York and get a place in Amish country. First of all the big college hoops games are on tonight. To be honest I didn't watch a single game during the season but now it's down to the wire and the games are good. If b-ball isn't your thing then there are a shite load of shows in the city tonight. Just go to OhMyRockness for the listings - there are at least 6-7 quality shows tonight.

Speaking of OhMyRockness they're having their March Radness party tonight, which will be good. But here's what I'm most likely to do tonight - Foodswings anniversary party. We're talking bands, DJs, booze, and food - and it's all vegan. They'll even be serving up "booze milkshakes." The food at this place is some of the best vegan/veg shit I've ever eaten and I grew up with a vegetarian dad so that's saying something.

The Ponys, Black Lips, and Panthers @ Bowery Ballroom 3/26

On Monday I headed over to the Bowery Ballroom to see the Black Lips. The last time I saw them was the infamous gig which got them permanently banned from the Mercury Lounge. That show put the Black Lips on the map and made little places like the Merc no longer necessary anyway.

Needless to say, I was pretty excited to see the Lips again. I've also been meaning to catch a Panthers show so that was an added bonus.

I got to the Ballroom a little earlier then I should have so I sat at the bar downstairs and had a few beers. When I heard the band start I went upstairs and got a spot up front. The Panthers came out swinging, despite a non-receptive crowd. I was actually surprised that people seemed disinterested, it seems like Lips fans would dig rowdy rock n' roll like the Panthers deliver. One chubby girl was dancing around like crazy and got a shout out from the band. I think she might have pissed her pants - which I didn't notice until I looked at the pictures.

After the Panthers cleared the stage the Ballroom filled in fast. I had to fight to keep my spot up front as the rabid fans poured onto the floor. When the Black Lips started everyone went fucking crazy. There was a mini-pit going on up front, more akin to CBGB pogo pits then their more brutal NYHC cousin.

My "great spot" turned out to be kind of shitty. All I could hear was the one guitar and not much else. After about 4-5 songs I abandoned my post and took a few steps back where I could hear the whole band. Now that I could actually hear what was going on I was stunned. The sloppy garage punks cleaned up their act big time. They sounded like (gasp) a professional band...and they were fucking awesome!

The vocals, coming from all four members, sounded amazing and truly vintage to the 60's garage sound. The crazy fuck guitar player that drank his own piss last time I saw him kept the antics to a minimum. He did manage to self induce vomiting and left a little puddle on stage. Other then that and a brief make out session with the other guitar player things were pretty tame.

I really can't stress how much better the Black Lips have gotten since I last saw them a year ago. A band that started out using shock antics to draw crowds can now draw the people in on their musical merits alone.

After the smoke cleared I noticed that Karen O. from the Yeah Yeah Yeahs was right up at the front of the stage. Apparently she was there the whole time bopping along to the Black Lips.

When the set was over the room cleared out and the Ponys set up. I really never listed to the Ponys much but I figured they would be something to stick around for. When they started the crowd seemed noticeably thinned out. Clearly the Lips were the main draw despite the Ponys claiming the headlining spot. Nevertheless, those who stayed seemed to be into the music.

I was a bit confused by the set they played. After two furious sets by the Black Lips and Panthers, The Ponys started with some mellow shit. This was a huge buzz kill for a lot of the people there. They did eventually get into some rocking tunes but they built up to it, instead of coming out with guns blazing like they should have. Ride the waves kids...ride the waves.

The Ponys were good but I would take a set by either of there openers any day. This was a Black Lips show through and through. Just like they stole Wolfmothers thunder a year ago tonight they stole the stage from the Ponys.

Tonight: HORSE The Band @ Europa

You have no idea how excited I am about this one. This is about the only new band that makes feel like I'm 14 again. I might even have to get in the pit for this one...

***Update: I walked past Europa around 4:30 and there were already kids waiting outside. Why exactly? I'm not sure, but rabid fans usually mean a good show is upon us.

What the shit is this world coming to? This is an actual video and not a well edited prank. May God (and Biggie) have mercy on your cracker ass soul.

The Silent Years Got Good

Remember the Silent Years? Well I saw them a while back at Pianos and they put on a good show. But apparently they've been practicing their ass off because the show they put on Saturday night at The Delancey was fucking brilliant. They have a few new members since I last saw them and apparently that means something. Seriously though if you have a chance to see them ya gotta go.

Remember Cutie? Life Is Here

Former BSC photographer Cutie (aka Baaron Von Cutie) is in a band these days. The band is called Life Is Here and they're located in South Jersey these days. This is a video they made recently and since Cutie used to contribute to BSC I figured I'd share it with all of you.

Drugs And Alcohol Report

Some scientific types have done research on the drugs we all love. What they discovered is that alcohol and is worse for you then acid and ecstasy. They assigned degrees of harm to each drug tested and my good friend booze was pretty high on the chart apparently.

You know those little books about albums called 33 1/3? Well they have announced the next batch and there are some good ones in there. Oh, but you're going to have to wait a year or two until they hit the stands. I really want to check out the 36 Chambers book!

Giant Squid

No, it's not the name of some hip new indie band - although that's not a bad name. Anyway, fishermen near New Zealand caught the world's largest colossal squid. It's absolutely fucking huge and scary. Look at the pictures of this thing - this think could take on a whale.

High Voltage Last Night

I went to High Voltage last night and I have to say it's a cool party. But I didn't stay very long because the drinks are expensive and I'm a heavy drinker with shallow pockets. I left while Madden #3 was on the decks, before Ultra went on - so I don't know if she sucked or not. I only bothered to take one picture, which I took when I was in line waiting for the pisser. Then we left and went to The Johnson's....

Stooges - "No Fun" @ SXSW (Video)

This is just fucking awesome...

Lars Ulrich - Not Cool Enough To Party (Video)

If this happened to anyone else I wouldn't care enough to post it but Lars is a grade A douche tool. It's just funny seeing this ass get denied and look so confused about what's going on. And by the way is that broad he's with his woman? If so couldn't he find someone a little shorter? Dude, you're 4'11", dating a chick that's 6'4" is a bit odd - even if she is smoking hot. Nice hat by the way.

Tonight: High Voltage w/ UltraGrrrl & Josh Madden

I know what you're saying. "Why the fuck are you endorsing this?" I know most of you hate UltraGrrrl and all of the Madden clan and I totally understand that. But considering that Grrrl was just on the cover of Village Voice I think it's safe to say tonight will draw an interesting crowd. It's basically going to be a circus show at Sutra tonight. Wannabes, douche nuggets, labelites, creeps and of course the typical rock n' rollers you'll always find at High Voltage. So come out to High Voltage: Nepotism Nightmare w/ Ultra & Joshy tonight at Sutra.

NYC Punk - Keeping The Scene Alive

When I was living in Morgantown, WV I was down with the local punk scene. This wasn't the shitty "punk" scene you grew up with in the suburbs - this was the real deal. The shows were wild, the bands were awesome, and the people were family. Morgantown even had it's own "punk house" - ever been to a punk house? If not you're missing out my friends, it's like a commune full of dirty, destructive, anarchist hoodlums - and it's god damn utopia.

Why am I talking about this you ask? Because believe it or not there is a punk scene in NYC. The NYC crew is a lot more organized, take a look at their website. If you're a weary punk traveler looking for a real show then this is your best bet. If you're in an NYC band and can't figure out where to play then they have resources to help you. It's damn near everything you need to stay in the loop, including news, band/show listings, movies, trade, and ride shares to shows.

So don't tell me the scene is dead in NYC. CBGB might be gone and the Continental might be a sports bar now but that doesn't mean the scene is dead. The scene is alive you just have to work a little harder to find it kids...

HORSE The Band Playing Brooklyn 3/29

If you read BSC regularly then you know I'm fascinated by the Nintendocore madmen known as HORSE The Band. They've been in and around the city a few times during the past year but they haven't headlined...until now! And not only are they headlining but they're playing right down the street in Greenpoint at Club Europa. The show is only $12 so you better be there, even if you think they suck they'll surely put on a show to remember.

Tonight: Burning Angels & Free Booze

Some band I never heard of just signed to Epic and are having a party. More importantly the Burning Angel girls will be here tonight and they're going to have free booze from 10-11PM.

***Update: I just heard this band...good thing this party has free booze and titties.

Want more porn chicks? Well you're in luck, on Friday the BA girls are getting naked for the sake of art. Pervs and artists alike will flock to this one...

Shift Happens: The Future Is Here

Watch this and tremble with fear...or be happy you're already on top of this shit.

Tonight: Ruff Club w/ Boys Noise & Para One

Ruff Club just added Boys Noise and Para One to the lineup tonight. They both played last night at Hiro but if you missed it you basically get another chance...at a much smaller/shittier venue. I normally wouldn't recommend Ruff Club but this should be a good night at The Annex.

SURPRISE! Happy Birthday....

I suggest you read this post from the Williamsboard in it's entirety. It's fucking hilarious and excruciating (in the funny way).

Bush Visits Brazil

Bush visited Brazil...this is what happened. It's nice to see people who actually give a shit, to bad they're not here.

Dateline: To Catch A Rock N' Roll Predator

Chris Hansen and Dateline have turned sexual predators into prime time gold. It's everyone's favorite show now. But the real sexual predators are still out there, touring the country and writing songs about their adventures with 15 year olds. Chris Hansen, you're dealing with small timers my friend - the rock stars are out there but you can't catch them with a computer.
Chris Hansen's most wanted list...

Top 5:

#1 Jerry Lee Lewis (AKA The Killer) - Married his 13 year old cousin at the age of 23. But then again, "in the old time it was not a crime."

#2 Jimmy Page (Led Zepplin) - At the age of 28 was in a public relationship with 14 year old Lori Maddox. Many other affairs with underage girls are rumored .

"If I played guitar I'd be Jimmy Page/The girlies I like are underage"
- Beastie Boys

#3 Elvis Presley (AKA The King) - Elvis had "an insatiable hunger for underage girls" and started dating Priscilla Wagner when she was 14.

#4 Pete Townsend (The Who) - Busted for possession of kiddie porn, claimed it was for "research."
#5 David Bowie & Angie Bowie - Rumored to have taken the virginity of, above mentioned, Lori Maddox when she was 13 years old.

The Watch List:
#6 Steven Tyler (Aerosmith) - Rumored to have numerous affairs with underage girls.
#7 Chuck Berry - Penned the song "Sweet Little Sixteen," what do you think that's about?
#8 Kip Winger (Winger) - Penned the song "Seventeen," again what's that about? Oh right, "Daddy says she's too young, But she's old enough for me"
#9 R. Kelly - Likes to piss on 14 year old girls...and also have sex with them. (Would have been higher, since he was caught, but he's not rock n' roll)
#10 All Rock Stars - Come on, like you would trust any of these dudes with your 15 year old daughter/sister.

If you see any of these dangerous predators please contact Dateline NBC.

Jim Ward (Sparta, x-ATDI): Live Acoustic Set @ Bar Matchless

On Sunday night Sparta played a show at the Warsaw in Brooklyn. I wasn't able to make it to the show but I did manage to make it to the after party down the street at Matchless. I had heard that Jim Ward, Sparta's front man, would be performing an acoustic set. Of course I wasn't going to miss a chance to see a solo acoustic performance by a former member of At The Drive In.

I got to the bar before the show was over at the Warsaw but there was already a decent size crowd. A little after midnight the flood gates opened and everyone poured into Matchless. If you haven't been there it's not a big place, especially the performance room. Upon seeing the herd we headed into the performance room and secured a decent spot up front while the guitar tech set up.

Then Jim hopped up on stage and everyone started hooting and hollering. It was a very intimate environment and Jim actually looked a little nervous. He kept mentioning that he's not used to the crowd being louder then the guitar.

The set he played was composed mostly of Sparta songs, which was a bit of a let down. I was hoping to hear some stuff he had actually written specifically as a side project. Although it was cool to hear the whole crowd singing along. I'm not going to go into details about the set but it was very short (6 songs) and hardly exceptional. But as Jim said it was his first time doing the solo acoustic thing so I'll cut him some slack. The one thing that stood out was his voice which is exceptional - something you might not notice with Sparta.

Here are a couple pics and a video I shot - enjoy.

Tonight: Sparta @ Warsaw + After Party @ Matchless

Tonight Sparta is playing the Warsaw (aka Best Venue In NYC), which you should go to. After you get hear them play and get a belly full of pierogies take a walk down the block to Matchless for the official after party. Jim Ward of Sparta will be playing a FREE acoustic set. Sounds pretty good, aye?

Dylan Hears A Who

I heard something about this a few weeks ago but I didn't bother listening to it. Now that I have I wish I gave it a spin a few weeks back. Not only is this funny but it's actually pretty good. The person doing the impression of Dylan gets a little carried away at times but for the most part it's one of the better Dylan's I've heard.

Trash 5-Year Anniversary @ Rififi

Last night I decided to go against doctors orders and head out. I felt like shit but I really couldn't justify missing the anniversary party of Trash. We got to Rififi around 1AM or so and walked into the new Rififi. You see it's been under construction for the past few weeks. The first thing I noticed was the bar was on the wrong side of the room.

Aside from that I didn't notice much difference and then it dawned on me. The fucking front bar is 1/3rd smaller then it used to be! Most people go to Rififi to dance in the back but I always preferred the front. Now it's so fucking tight in there you can't move, plus all the couches are gone. Where the bar used to be there is now an enclosed hallway leading to a second exit - which I'm sure we can thank the city for.

After pushing my way threw the mob scene up front I made it to the back room. There was an odd odor in the room that I couldn't put my finger on. It wasn't BO or anything like that, maybe it had to do with the renovation. Anyway, they did manage to enlarge the backroom. That's great for most of the people who go there but for me, not so much.

But I'm not going to talk about my dislike of the renovations. Let's talk about the 5-year anniversary party. When I made it to the back Bronques was spinning with a little help from Jess. The dance floor and stage were completely packed and everyone was having a good time. It was honestly one of the best crowds I've seen in there and that's saying something.

There were a slew of photographers there all taking a shitload of pics - Ambrel, Bronques, Nicky Digital, and random people with fancy SLRs. It was quite a scene and everyone there knew it. Everyone was dressed to impress, which is not typical of Trash. Normally it's more of a jeans and t-shirt crowd - granted those are skinny jeans and old ratty rock n' roll t-shirts. Last night however was a little more fashionable but that's to be expected at an anniversary party.

As I said I was under the weather and so was my girlfriend so we decided after about an hour and a half to hit the road. The party was still going strong but I was just not in the mood, which really fucking sucked. I knew I missing out on an excellent time.

As I said there were a ton of photographers there so I didn't really take many pics at all. I'll update this with links to the photo blogs as they go online.

Tonight: Trash 5-Year Anni + Hot Rocks + Murphy's Law

One of the few weekly parties I can always rely on is Trash. I've spent more Friday nights at Rififi then I can remember. You may have noticed that Trash has been MIA lately because of "renovations" at Rififi. Well after a brief hiatus the best thing to do on a Friday night is back with it's 5-year anniversary party. All the familiar faces are going to be there including Jess, Brendan James, Antonio, Bronques, Michael T, and anyone I may have forgot.

If Trash isn't your thing then maybe Hot Rocks @ The Delancey is. For a measly $5 you get 3 bands, DJ sets, and some free PBR.

And since BSC is one of the only blogs that covers hardcore I have to share this one with you. Hardcore legends Murphy's Law are playing a show tonight in...Staten Island, sorry. But hey it's hard to find a good hardcore show in NYC these days so I guess it's worth the trip.
