On Saturday night, as part of my birthday festivities, I headed over to Sin-e to catch one of my favorite new bands - Apes & Androids. The last time I saw them was one of the best shows I've seen in years. Since then word has spread fast among blogs and industry types about these guys. I was expecting something even more spectacular then last time, after all people are paying attention now.
With high hopes we got to Sin-e right around 11PM. The place was packed from front to back. I led the charge through the crowd and got a nice spot at the front of the stage, right next to the Sigmund Droid crew. While I was waiting there I noticed the stage was a little bare. This time there was no fire eyed android ape on stage.
After a fairly long setup time the finally started playing. Immediately I noticed something seemed off. Then I realized that we were so close to the stage we were hearing the monitors and not the house speakers. Damn it! What to do? Stay up front and see the show or step back and hear it? Technically we could hear it where we were it just wasn't a very rich sound. We decided to stay up front and see the best show in town.
The band was very on point and played fantastically. They played the crowd favorites "Radio" and "Hot Kathy". By the way, you must hear "Hot Kathy" live to fully appreciate it - it's amazing. About halfway through the set glow sticks were distributed amongst the crowd. They dropped the lights and everyone started waving them around which made for a cool little light show.
At some point people in neon colored sleeping bags attacked the crowd and started a chain reaction of dancing. For the final song kazoos were passed out to the crowd and everyone played along to that song you hear at every sporting event ever. I don't know the name of it but I think you know what I'm talking about - din na na na HEY! da na na na.
In all honesty I was a bit let down by the lack of glowing orbs and giant ape hands hovering over the crowd. That said A&A needed a show like this to prove that they aren't all smoke and mirrors. I think they managed to do just that. I have a feeling that this band will blow up in the very near future. Some one in the crowd made a comment that this is like seeing the Ramones at CBGBs back in the mid 70's. While I'm not willing to go that far I can say that you do feel like you're part of something special when you're at an Apes and Androids show.
